CBD vs Delta-8
As mentioned in our previous blog post about CBD , cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid in hemp. Delta-8 THC is also a cannabinoid in hemp, found in trace quantities, but mostly isomerized from CBD. Thus, most labs produce Delta-8 from CBD.
While Delta-8 binds to the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, CBD changes the shape of the CB1 receptor in a way that weakens its ability to bind with THC. CBD also modulates several non-cannabinoid receptors and ion channels.
Both are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.
Difference between Delta-9 THC and Delta-8 THC
From a chemical or structural perspective, delta-8-THC differs from delta-9-THC due to the location of a critical chemical bond. Both delta-8 and delta-9-THC contain double bonds in their molecular chain. Delta-8-THC contains that bond on the 8th carbon chain, while delta-9-THC contains the bond on the 9th carbon chain. Although it’s a subtle difference, it has noticeable effects on how the body’s endocannabinoid receptors bind and respond to the molecule.
While they are different, they both bind to the CB1 receptor and offer psychotropic effects; however, Delta-8 THC is half as strong, delivering a lower potency, which some find more tolerable and suitable for recreational use.
Delta-8 vs CBD
More research is available for CBD. CBD is highly sought out for its potential for pain relief and for anti-anxiety. Delta-8 THC has potential for anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, and appetite stimulation.
Like Delta-9 THC, research suggests that optimal effects occur when THC and CBD are taken together.
